About Uniform Civil Code (UCC) The UCC calls for formulation of one law to be made applicable to all religious communities in matters such as marriage divorce inheritance and adoption. It is intended to replace the system of fragmented personal laws which currently governs interpersonal relationships and related matters within different religious communities. The idea comes from Article 44 (one of the Directive Principles of State Policy) of the Constitution which provides that the State shall endeavour to secure for all citizens a Uniform Civil Code throughout the territory of India. Arguments in favour of a UCC Simplification of laws When enacted the code will work to simplify laws that are segregated at present on the basis of religious beliefs like the Hindu code bill Shariat law and others.
